Every week it seems another press or broadcast publisher adds to online offerings. There are over 50 online news sites in NZ at the moment, with all the metropolitan and daily publications covered. In addition Newstalk radio, National Radio, 3news and TVNZ news continually update their websites with breaking news. These sources produce approximately 1000 clips per day and that figure is set to rise as more publications move online. News monitors and the public relations industry will have to adapt to this changing landscape and the opportunities it presents. Cliptec is built around a lightweight infrastructure that allows rapid adaptation to the changing online ecosystems and response to customer requirements.
Having access to news via the internet greatly streamlines the production process allowing accurate extraction of text which enables more detailed and rapid accurate analysis.
This is a very exciting area to work in, where significant savings in the cost of media-capture, allowing Cliptec to devote more energy to innovation whilst still offering significant savings to clients. Already we are leading the industry by offering keyword-annotated pdfs. The highlighting of keywords as they appear in clippings allows the client to quickly establish why they have been sent the clip and if the clip assigned to them correctly. Cliptec also gives the frequency of keywords in the clip. This combined with the headline information allows the reader to quickly deduce the relevance of each clip.
We are in the process of collecting publication meta-data, about each news source, this will be supplied in a separate file with each dispatch. This allows you to perform analysis on the clipping by importing the data into spread sheets and databases.
Phillip Smith has nearly ten years experience in the technology behind media monitoring. As the IT manager at Chong Newztel he was responsible for bringing state of the art digital press clipping and digital broadcast monitoring systems to New Zealand
