With more than 750 eager volunteers now registered for the 2010 World Rowing Championships, organisers are no longer accepting new applications.

“The response has been amazing,” says Volunteer Manager Ruth Tuiraviravi. “We wanted to have 650 names on the database to cover all contingencies and in recent weeks we have been flooded with new applications. The calibre of applicants and their enthusiasm for the event is fantastic. The Karapiro Crew will make this event truly memorable for competitors, officials and spectators.”

Volunteers registered on the database apply for specific positions on the various teams supporting the Organising Committee. Some 600 jobs have been defined and 310 jobs have been filled. Many volunteers are hard at work already in areas such as traffic management, accommodation, accreditation, competition and function planning.

Volunteers range in age from 16 to 80+ and come from all walks of life including students, CEOs, pensioners and parents. Approximately 100 applicants are veterans from 1978, the last time the World Rowing Championships were held in New Zealand. Applications have been received from volunteers as far away as Belgium, Canada, Germany, the UK and USA.

“The volunteers in the Karapiro Crew underpin the event,” says CEO Tom Mayo. “Like all major events, we depend on volunteers in every area both on the water and off the water. This chance to be involved in the 2010 World Rowing Championships will be an experience our volunteers will never forget.”

The Karapiro Crew volunteer programme is sponsored by Mighty River Power.
