Auckland, 24 February 2011 – In the wake of the tragedy in Christchurch, AIA New Zealand and Quantum Sport confirm that the CrackerJacks Kids Champions Dinner, scheduled to be held on Thursday 3 March, has been postponed.

AIA New Zealand is principal sponsor of the CrackerJacks Kids programme, which is run in primary schools by Quantum Sport.

AIA New Zealand CEO Wayne Besant said, “Like everyone in the country, we were shocked by the earthquake that has devastated the Canterbury community. Our thoughts are with everyone in the region. In light of this disaster, a unanimous decision was made to cancel the Crackerjack Kids Champions Dinner. This will enable both organizations to divert our resources to help Canterbury kids overcome the trauma and grief that has resulted from the tragedy.”

Quantum Sport CEO Ken Youngson said, “Our decision to cancel the dinner had the full backing of our keynote speakers Graham Henry and Judge Andrew Becroft, both of whom share our concern for the people of Canterbury.

“Over the next few days the Crackerjack Kids team will be looking at ways in which we can support children in Canterbury. Our aim is to help affected children develop crucial life skills to deal with the trauma through sport and physical activity, and bring a sense of normality - and fun - back into their lives as their community rebuilds.”

Mr Besant said, “We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the change of plan – however, at this tragic time I’m sure the friends and supporters of CrackerJacks Kids join us in wanting to pitch in and provide support for our fellow New Zealanders wherever we can. We will have an update shortly on what AIA New Zealand and the CrackerJacks Kids team will be doing together to help kids in Canterbury over the coming weeks and months.”
