Chinese reach a verdict – August 17, 2011

The Chinese man accused of murdering Auckland taxi driver Hiren Mohini in January 2010, has today been found guilty by a panel of judges who presided over his day-long trial in Shanghai on August 2.

The guilty verdict was handed down to XIAO Zhen, 24, at 3pm (Shanghai time) who was simultaneously sentenced to 15 years in a Shanghai prison.

Officer in charge of the Auckland City Police investigation into Mr Mohini's murder, Detective Senior Sergeant Hywel Jones, has been in Shanghai for the trial and to hear today's verdict which, he says, is no surprise.

"The evidence against Xiao that was collected, collated and presented to the Court was compelling. The prosecution process has been intriguing and is a testament to international co-operation. I have advised Hiren's family of today's outcome."
