Kapiti Police following positive lines of enquiry in relation to early morning incident

Kapiti Police are following positive lines of inquiry in relation to an incident in the early hours of this morning.

Officer in charge of the Kapiti CIB Detective Sergeant Ian Martin says at around 1am, two local men got involved in an altercation with security staff at a local bar. The victim in this matter intervened and assisted security staff to break up the altercation, which ended peacefully.

"Between 3:30 and 4am this morning, the victim and two associates were outside the Paraparaumu Fire Station on Kapiti Road, when a vehicle stopped across the road. The driver was recognised as being one of the two men involved in the earlier altercation."

He says words were exchanged between the victim and the driver and a passenger got out of the vehicle and presented a firearm at the victim. The victim wrestled with this person to remove the firearm, to no avail.

"The passenger then returned to the vehicle which drove off towards the Kapiti Lights. The victim chased the vehicle on foot a short distance before the vehicle stopped and the passenger shot at the victim, who received a superficial hand wound."

Detective Sergeant Martin says earlier media reports have stated the incident was a 'drive-by shooting' which is not correct.
