Tiny paraki fish are the smartest in the sea because their strong
cucumber smell puts most people off eating them. But West Coasters
Daniel Dick (left) and Steve Hoy decided this was the year to introduce
the world to the taste treat which is twice the size of a whitebait and
follows it in season. Dipped in flour and quickly deep fried in the wok,
the paraki sticks proved so popular, they'll be back next year. The
smell goes away after the paraki are cooked.
