Oamaru is among 15 towns selected to compete for the title of New Zealand’s Top Town, it was announced by TV2 this morning.

The towns were selected from more than 35 applicants, and were chosen because of the quality of their applications and the geographical spread across the country.

Christchurch has been chosen as the host city where the competition will be held during late November and early December.

The successful towns competing in next year’s Top Town are: Ashburton, Gisborne, Gore, Greymouth, Masterton, Motueka, Oamaru, Otorohanga, Papakura, Queenstown, Taupo, Timaru, Whakatane, Whangarei and the host city Christchurch.

Waitaki Community Safety Officer, Alison Banks, and Constable Ross Lory, will be managing the local team in a voluntary capacity on behalf of Mayor Alex Familton.
Mrs Banks said that they are expecting the detail relating to the competition to arrive later today.
“We are negotiating with a local organisation regarding financial support for the team, but our first priority is getting a team together. We’re on the lookout for the best athletes over the age of 18.”

A trial for team members will be held at 6pm on Wednesday the 5th of November at Oamaru Intermediate School.

“Ross and I are looking forward to the challenge and getting our local team through to the final. Our community pride is at stake and it’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase Waitaki. We’re encouraging our community to get behind the chosen team,” Mrs Banks said.
