Waihi’s Friday night community skating has received a boost with 100 pairs of new skates funded by The Lion Foundation.

A recent grant from the charitable trust has enabled Waihi Inline Hockey Club to provide the additional skates for the approximately 100 youth who enjoy the popular activity regularly.

Peter Shields, Waihi Inline Hockey Club President says the new skates will enable even more young people to participate.

“Our Friday night skating is run by volunteers and is growing in popularity. Thanks to the generosity of The Lion Foundation, we are now able to cater for the increasing number of young people enjoying skating.”

Mr Shields adds: “This activity is having a huge impact on the local youth. It is supported and encouraged by the local schools and police, and we are very grateful for The Lion Foundation’s assistance.”

Operating for over 20 years and one of the country’s most widely respected charitable trusts, The Lion Foundation is proud to encourage the enjoyment and skill of various sporting activities by distributing back to the local community the funds raised through its gaming venue, The Rob Roy in Waihi.

“Waihi Inline Hockey Club fulfils a community need by providing an enjoyable and physical activity for local youth,” says The Lion Foundation Chief Executive Phil Holden.

“We are proud to support the club, the volunteers and the popular community service being provided.”

The Lion Foundation funds a wide range of arts, cultural, sporting, educational and health focused causes. This approach has been in place for many years and is designed to ensure the charitable trust’s support reaches as many New Zealand communities as possible.
