Sporting organisations and individuals have a shot at a share of $50,000 through Taupō District Council-funded grants. The funding will be distributed by the Lake Taupō District Sports Advisory Council (SAC), which is inviting applications for funds to assist sporting individuals and groups in the Taupō/Kaingaroa and Mangakino/Pouakani wards.

Taupō District Council allocates funding through the Long Term Plan to support sporting activities and projects in the area SAC covers. SAC is the distributing the funding and co-ordinating the process on Council’s behalf.

Of the $50,000 of funding available, half is being allocated to assist voluntary sports clubs and organisations in projects or services that benefit the community. Past recipients include hockey, waka ama, equestrian, rugby and gymnastics clubs. Grants have also been given to assist with tournaments, travel costs and the purchase of new equipment.

The other half will be available as financial grants to reward individual sportspeople who live in the area. For individuals, the funding will be to recognise their national and international excellence in sport and how their achievements have benefited the community.

The Lake Taupō District Sports Advisory Council is a voluntary organisation that facilitates the development of sportspeople. Applications are now open. Funds are distributed annually in October. Forms can be collected from Sport House, 105 Tamamutu Street, Taupō or found online at www.sportsground.co.nz/tauposportservices or on this website here. Applications close on 5 October 2012 at 4.00pm.
