Sober Check are the specialists in certified alcohol and drug testing equipment but they also do breathalyser calibration. The Sober Check team recommend that all alcohol breathalysers need regular calibration to ensure their accuracy, and this calibration is performed by using ethanol at a set point to test the breathalysers against, then the sensor is re-aligned accordingly. Sober Check offer a fast turnaround, two to three days for personal breathalysers and one to two days for workplace breathalysers. They also provide a service of 'calibration swap' units for those workplaces which cannot operate without a breathalyser.

At Sober Check they recommend calibration of breathalyser every six to twelve months, depending on usage, as the alcohol tester breathalyzer needs to be reading accurately to give readings that people can trust. Similarly, anything with a point of accuracy does need calibration and, in fact, this will extend the life of the product. The Sober Check team realise it is not an easy task getting drug and alcohol testing implemented in the workplace, so they are there to help.

Companies will need to identify what they are trying to achieve in their workplace, and usually this is a safe working environment which is free of alcohol and drug impairment. They will also need to consider their legal requirements under the Health & Safety Act, Employment Relations Act, Privacy Act and AS/NZS4308:2008 Standard for Workplace Drug Testing. They will also need to work out what is and isn't acceptable in the workplace, when testing will be carried out, why it will be carried out, and how it will be carried out.  They will then need to specify consequences/actions depending on results. As the team at Sober Check explain, writing effective policy is not easy, so they are happy to recommend policy writers to help out.

To be able to do in-house drug testing as per the AS/NZS4308:2008 Standard, a company will be required to complete a NZQA course to achieve 2 Units Standards, US 25458 & US 25511.  This is a half - one day course which gives a good understanding of what is required.  Once these Unit Standards are achieved they don't need to be revised or updated.

Sober Check do not provide NZQA training; however they are happy to recommend NZQA trainers in the client’s area, so for more information on this and all other aspects of Sober Check’s products and services, please visit the website at http://www.sobercheck.co.nz .
