As we’re finally in the Summer months, it’s time to reignite your love and passion for your backyard. The days are getting longer and the sun is getting warmer. Kiwis from Cape Reinga to Bluff love to spend their time in the backyard when the weather is at its best. You can’t help but realise that there are a handful of classic activities celebrated in many backyards throughout the country.

If you’re lucky enough to have a big backyard, a few rounds of backyard cricket are always a fun time. Once everyone agrees on the rules, you’ll be set for hours of playing out under the sun. For the extra authenticity, you could get the lawn mowing done and mow a pitch into the grass for the perfect playing field. If you’re batting, make sure to keep your hits nice and low. Aside from it keeping you in the game longer, you’ll be less likely to smash your neighbour’s beloved garden ornaments.

Maybe you fancy yourself a green thumb. With all this sun after such a wet winter, the growth in your garden is going to need some tending to. If you get the urge to get some work done, spending half a day gardening is a great way to feel a sense of accomplishment. You can get all the pesky weeds out, trim back any plants that are getting over-grown, and even look into planting some flowers so your garden will have a bit more colour. Some examples of flowers that are great to plant in summer are marigold, hibiscus, and aster.

With the sunlight stretching out until the late evening, there is even more time to entertain guests in your backyard. What better way to entertain your family and friends than a classic Kiwi barbecue. Get all the blokes to stand around the barbecue and criticise the guy with tongs in hand. Let the kids run around with a ball and hope no windows get shattered, and all the ladies can get a moment of serenity until something goes wrong and they have to save the day. Don’t forget to put out a few citronella candles or bug spray to repel the mozzies from chewing on your guests.
