Former New Zealand Davis Cup player and the coach of former Wimbledon Men’s singles champion, Michael Stich wants to get people active.

Now in a position as Club and Schools Manager at Tennis Auckland, Lewis is motivated to get more people, young and old taking up sport, particularly tennis.

Many people often desire to try something new but simply don’t have the nerve or confidence to act on their ambitions. That’s why Tennis Auckland introduced the concept of Easi-Tennis several years ago to offer a simple way for adults to try and learn a new sport.

Tennis Auckland’s Easitennis programme is a thoroughly enjoyable way for adults to learn to play the game. Through a series of six 90 minute group lessons over a three week condensed period, participants learn to serve, hit forehands, backhands and volleys.

They are all given the rundown on basic rules, etiquette and strategy designed to get them ready to play at one of the forty nine affiliated tennis clubs in the Auckland region.

Professional tennis coaches advise beginners about ways to improve along with valuable practice and homework exercises. Evening classes are offered so that even the busiest people can sign up for the crash course of Easitennis.

Tennis Auckland offer a variety of locations including the Scarbro Tennis Centre, Nicholson Park, Manukau Tennis Centre and Pompallier Tennis Club.

“Tennis is such a great sport and one of the attractions is the fact that there is no right or wrong time to start playing. It doesn’t matter if you are only two years old like I was when I started or 32,” says Lewis.

“You can always learn and enjoy it for the rest of your life. Easitennis is a terrific concept because not only do adults learn new skills but they get to do it in a comfortable and relaxed social environment. For anybody thinking about a new sport this summer it’s an absolute no-brainer – it’s got to be game, set and match for Easitennis.”

The course has already attracted over 50 new beginners in the last month and the first round of courses has only just got underway.

Tennis Auckland is offering more programmes throughout November and again in February next year. As the weather improves, it may just be time to dust off that old racquet and give it a go.
