Environment Canterbury welcomes the release of the draft transport plan for the central city by the Christchurch Central Development Unit.

“We support the plan and have been closely involved in its development,” says Environment Canterbury Commissioner Rex Williams. “It recognises an opportunity to preserve key corridors for future public transport possibilities beyond buses.

“We see it as another step towards bringing the central city blueprint to reality and it links well with our own vision for public transport.”

The plan is consistent with the changes being made by Environment Canterbury to the Christchurch Metro network, starting with the introduction of the Blue Line on 3 December. This new network will ensure a more efficient network with buses connecting at suburban hubs as well as in the central city at the Central Station.

Rex Williams says that the draft is true to the vision established through the Christchurch City Council ‘share an idea process’, especially in relation to the bus interchange and other street features to support public transport which is important to a progressive region. “We are working with CCDU, CERA, CCC and NZTA to ensure appropriate infrastructure which supports the roll out of the network and that it incorporates central city facilities with those in the suburbs.”
