October was a month of great progress for the Hawke’s Bay Museum & Art Gallery redevelopment, with building completion on target for April next year.

Interiors are looking more finished in the new wing, with walls fully framed, lined and painted and the doors installed. External walls are being plastered and the feature skylight for the first floor’s small gallery is all but complete. Aluminium joinery is in place in the front entrance, with glazing to follow.

The central hub for the existing wing, the Octagon provides an entry/exit point to the Louis Hay entrance and access to the Gwen Malden, Mclean and Bestall galleries. A spectacular space, it features display cabinets in each quadrant and historic glass tiles that reflect light from the basement. It will be graced with a chandelier secured to the domed ceiling. Restoration work is well advanced in this area.

The original entrance to the Century Theatre has a new floor level, which provides access to an outdoor deck and Herschell Street, and the linkway to the new wing through the Taonga Gallery.

Once the building work is completed, Herschell Street will be reconstructed and the galleries fitted out by museum staff.
