Mayor Alistair Sowman and Council economic development manager Neil Henry boarded the Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team (SCIRT) bus when it pulled into Blenheim last week, promoting job training opportunities in Christchurch.

The mobile recruitment unit is travelling the country, offering people the chance to look at the kind of work that is available and to register for training. Currently, the recruitment is for people wanting work in roading and underground services. Full training is promised, with course fees and a living allowance paid, and work guaranteed with one of the SCIRT employers on completion of a training course.

About 50 people visited the bus in the four hours it was in Blenheim last week.

The Mayor says this is one way for young people in particular to get into training, with the knowledge that a job will be there at the end of their course.

“I’m interested in exploring the possibility of our NMIT offering this training module with the understanding that the newly qualified workers would then have guaranteed opportunity to be employed in the rebuild,” he said.
It’s still possible to get information, or register interest in the training, by going to CHCHFORREAL.CO.NZ or on Facebook, ChChForReal or texting “REAL” to 5885.

The SCIRT bus is scheduled to visit Marlborough again in February, recruiting people for further trades work in Christchurch.
