New research into the contribution campervan tourism makes to New Zealand’s economy is a valuable addition to the industry’s knowledge base, Tourism Industry Association (TIA) Chief Executive Martin Snedden says.

A report released today, initiated by Tourism Holdings Ltd (thl) and conducted by research company Covec, reveals that travellers using campervans contribute almost half a billion dollars a year to the economy.

It shows that travellers using campervans spend their money on a huge range of items, including holiday parks, fuel, groceries, restaurant dining, retail, attractions and activities.

“This valuable research shows campers are contributing to communities all around New Zealand, supporting local businesses and jobs in regional areas as well as the main centres,” Mr Snedden says.

“Their spending is not limited to tourism operators but is spread across a wide range of businesses in the community.”

The research also highlights the value of New Zealanders using campervans to holiday in their own country. Domestic travellers who hire campervans spend $38.1 million a year outside their home regions.
