MARLBOROUGH

Many people don’t realise the size of the Marlborough District Council’s role in Marlborough.

While most understand that water supply, sewage and roads are the nuts and bolts of Council business, sometimes they’re surprised to learn how much the Council delivers in services across the community.

For example, in Marlborough the Council provides:

  • Pest management programs including the coordination and monitoring of 'declared' regional pests - including rabbits and Argentine ants and plants such as Nassella tussock and Chilean needlegrass
  • Environmental monitoring of natural resources district-wide, including fresh and marine water quality, river flows, soils and air quality
  • Control of Picton harbor through the Harbourmaster, who is employed by the Council and is the authority responsible for safety in Sounds waters
  • Pensioner housing, providing low-cost rental flats in Blenheim, Picton and Renwick.
  • Animal Control through a firm contracted to handle registrations and also education and animal neglect cases
  • Inspection of food outlets to maintain hygiene standards.

Monthly Council meetings and the monthly meetings of the three council subcommittees (Community & Financial Planning, Assets & Services and Environment) are open to the public. Meeting times are advertised in the media and are on the Council website www.marlborough.govt.nz in the Meetings section under the

Your Council tab.

Council regularly calls for submissions on a range of issues. Submissions can be quite informally made. All feedback is collated and considered.

Members of the public may also participate through Council-supported forums such as: the Elder Persons’ Forum or the Youth Forum, Bike-Walk Marlborough, the Landscape Group, Sounds Advisory Group, Picton Forum, Picton Business Group.

Council 24-hour phone number: 03 520 7400.
