The overnight sealing of Lucas Place in Frankton will see a detour in place for vehicular traffic next week.

Queenstown Lakes District Council transport manager Denis Mander said while overnight closures for road works were still not common locally, the high number of daytime vehicle movements on the street made it the best option.

“Lucas Place is a feeder route for both Remarkables Park and Queenstown Airport and has somewhere between 8 and 10 thousand vehicle movements a day,” Mr Mander said.

“It’s a very busy road during the day but much less busy at night, which gives us an opportunity to minimise traffic disruption.”

The work would take place between the hours of 6pm and 6am from Monday 14 January 2013 to Friday 18 January, 2013. Detours and traffic management would be in place during the work period with parking restrictions also in place. Parking restrictions were also a possibility on both sides of Robertson and Douglas Streets to enable traffic to move freely.

Businesses and residents in the area had been advised of the upcoming work and arrangements had been made to ensure emergency vehicles still had access to the hospital. Vehicle access to properties and businesses would not be affected but there was the possibility of short delays.

No road closures were planned during the day although there would possibly be occasions when Lucas Place would be reduced to one lane. In those instances, traffic management would be in place.

Mr Mander said that while the road works would entail some disruption, the work was an essential part of delivering quality roads.
