Give the kids a treat before they go back to school, and take them to a Greater Wellington Regional Council-hosted twilight walk above Lowry Bay in Eastbourne.

On Wednesday 30 January, East Harbour Regional Park Ranger Mark McAlpine will lead the annual Back of the Bay walk, part of the Regional Council’s Great Outdoors summer events programme.

“We mainly get adults on this walk but we’d really like to see more kids this year – I reckon they’ll enjoy having an evening adventure in the forest.”

Mark says that the walk gets glowing feedback from participants. “They love the great views over the harbour and the beautiful native bush, which goes from podocarp to beech as we reach the ridgeline.

“The bush is very different in the twilight. The light is softer and the birds are more active. Hopefully we’ll get a nice sunset for this year’s event, weather allowing.”

The walk requires a moderate level of fitness and does have a bit of a climb at the beginning, so is recommended for children aged 9 and over.
