With four weeks left until Christmas, decorations are going up on lamp posts all over Hastings District.

The decorations measure between 1.5 metres and 2.5 metres in diameter and were made by the Hastings District Council Parks Team.

This is the first year the Council has made its own decorations. In previous years they have been imported from Australia.

Derek Thompson, Hastings District Parks Manager, said it was more cost effective for Council to make decorations for the district but did take time.

“The guys in our Parks Team designed them and made them this year. It has taken about 200 working hours and all the work has been done on wet weather days when working in the parks and gardens is more difficult,” said Mr Thompson.

Three thousand six hundred metres of tinsel in a range of colours have been used on the decorations. At one point work on the decorations had to cease as the tinsel supplier had run out of product.

“The guys have chosen their own colours for the decorations. The only one we prescribed was Santa in the traditional red and white. The creativity of our team has been wonderful to watch,” said Mr Thompson.

The decorations hang in Havelock North and Hastings and will stay up until mid January.
