February is a great time to leave your car at home and ride your bike to work.

As an extra incentive to put your feet on the pedals, Bike Wise Month includes the Commuter Challenge which runs between February 11th and 15th. The Challenge offers anyone who is prepared to ride their bike to work on any day of the week, a chance to enjoy a scrumptious breakfast on the way.

Deputy Mayor Cynthia Bowers says “Hastings District Council’s iWay project is joining in the fun and will provide breakfast for cyclists in the Central Mall on Wednesday 13th February, which is Go by Bike Day. The event has been held in Hastings for the past two years and hundreds of cyclists have joined us for breakfast on each occasion. This event is for anyone who can ride a bike and it has been great to see a number of schools encouraging their students to take part in the ride over the past two years.”

“This is the first year that Napier and Hastings have combined their resources to organise events for the Commuter Challenge. Cyclists who stop off for breakfast will be able to meet other like minded people and learn more about the benefits of cycling to work. It may not be practical to ride to work each day but even if you can cycle one day a week it will give you a boost before you start work.”

Cynthia Bowers says “Cycling to work has many benefits. It gets you active and invigorated before you start work, helps keep you healthy and reduces traffic congestion. Cycling also reduces your petrol bill and carbon emissions.”

The week’s activities include:

Monday 11th February:
Hastings: Cycle to breakfast at Westpac Bank in Heretaunga Street
Napier:  Breakfast will be served at Fish Bike Rentals on Marine Parade

Tuesday 12th February:
Hastings: Cycle to breakfast at Avantiplus and Bakers Delight in Queen Street West
Napier: Breakfast on the deck at Langley Twigg Law in Ahuriri

Wednesday 13th February:
Hastings: Go by Bike Day with an iWay breakfast in the Central Mall in Hastings CBD
Napier: Breakfast will be served outside the HB Regional Council building in Dalton Street

Thursday 14th February:
Hastings: Cycle to breakfast at Kathmandu in Russell Street
Napier: Breakfast will be served outside Kathmandu in Dickens Street

Friday 15th February:
Hastings: Cycle to breakfast at Health Hawke’s Bay – Te Oranga Hawke’s Bay (Staples Rodway Building) on the corner of Hastings Street South and Lyndon Road
Napier: Breakfast will be served outside Chris Tremain’s electorate office Station Street

There will be fun and prizes to give away during each breakfast and the major prize is a weekend luxury cycling challenge on the Hawkes Bay Trails, tailored to suit the winner. This will include dinner and accommodation at the award winning Clearview Estate Winery.

At the Go by Bike Day breakfast in Hastings Central Mall on Wednesday 13th February a fantastic Mad Gear Pro BMX bike and a scooter will be given away.

The Commuter Challenge attracts thousands of kiwis from all around the country to take to their bikes and cycle to work, school, or just to have some fun. It’s about getting people to give cycling a go and see how easy it is to get where you need to go by bicycle.
