Riverside Park, the recreational area at the northern end of Tongariro Domain, is open for the public to enjoy from Saturday 1 December.

The area has been closed during the winter months to allow the new amphitheatre to be formed, additional trees and shrubs to be planted and a new path and a boardwalk to be put in place.

The park has been designed and laid out to complement the unique river setting and the community is encouraged to head down and enjoy the recreational area alongside the river from this Saturday onwards.

A tree planting and blessing will be held on Friday 30 November to mark the occasion.

Riverside Market, previously the Settlers Market, has moved from Gascoigne Street to outside the Arts Society Building and will be having their first official market at the new location on Saturday, to coincide with the opening to the public of Riverside Park.

There is still some ongoing work to be carried out at the park including further paving, general riverbank improvement, riverside fencing, storyboard information, and lighting. Further development and improvements will be made in future years, as funding allows.

Riverside Park has been an initiative within Council’s Tongariro Domain Reserve Management Plan.
