Over 2500 children will be taking part in Regional Wheels Day and Babes on Bikes celebrations on Thursday February 14.

Wheels Day and Babes on Bikes have been organised for early childhood centres and primary schools to celebrate 33 Days of Cycling.  The promotion is open to all schools and early childhood centres in in the Manawatu region to encourage students to get on their bikes and have fun.

All schools receive spot prizes and go in the draw to win lots of active prizes. For schools to be in to win, they needed to submit a photo of the kids out on their bikes – it’s easy as that.

Sport Manawatu’s Events Advisor Kathy McMillan describes the day as a great chance for schools to celebrate 33 Days of Cycling and encourage children to be active, healthy, and most importantly have fun!

Schools and early childhood centres can shape the celebrations to suit their schedules. Some schools are hosting obstacle classes for the whole school, while other are running class activities.

“Bunnythorpe School has been running ‘Wheels Time’ at their school during lunch time throughout 33 Days of Cycling so lots of children have been using active transport to get to school, which is something they want to encourage”.

“We are looking forward to seeing lots of children out on their bikes”, says Ms McMillan

“Not all children have access to bikes so children are also allowed to bring scooters or skates. We don’t want children to miss out on the fun if they aren’t able to get a hold of a bike.”
