CANTERBURY

The endless Kiwi summer welcomed one of the world’s largest cruise ships to Akaroa today.

The Queen Mary 2 arrived in picture perfect conditions in Akaroa Harbour this morning with two and a half thousand passengers and twelve hundred crew. Black Cat Cruises Managing Director Paul Bingham said it had been a very busy day for Akaroa and that his company had sold out its two special one hour cruises put on just to view the impressive ship.

The ship leaves at 6pm heading south for Milford Sound on the last leg of its maiden circumnavigation of New Zealand.

Bingham said there are just two weeks left of the cruise ship season and then he expects things to quieten down a bit. “The cruise ships are great for the town and for the Canterbury tourism industry. To have a ship like the Queen Mary 2 in town on such an awesome day is just fantastic; it’s been an endless summer, but it will come to an end eventually. In the meantime everyone is making the most of it while they can.”
