Paralympics New Zealand (PNZ) is thrilled with the results of the NZ Para-Shooting team at the IPC Shooting World Cup held from 1 – 4 July 2013. Not only did the team win gold, silver and bronze medals, Michael Johnson set a new world record in the R4 event.
New Zealand shooters competed over two days - 3 & 4 July. During Day 1 London Paralympian Michael Johnson claimed a bronze medal in the R5 10m Air Rifle Prone event after a nerve racking and close final. He was joined in this event by team mates Grant Phillip (who finished 15th) and Robert Smith (who finished 36th).
Greg Reid also competed in the R3 Air Rifle 10m Prone and finished 8th overall, setting a new Oceania record.
Day 2 saw Robert Smith, Michael Johnson and Grant Phillip complete in the R4 Air Rifle 10m Standing event with great success. Michael won Gold and set a new World Record.
Grant Philip was ninth in qualifying missing out on making the final (top 8) by the smallest of margins. Robert Smith was 30th.
The team then came together to win a silver medal in the team event.
Malcolm Humm (High Performance Director, PNZ) says, “This was a great performance from our team at the World Cup to take away three medals and a world record,” he continues, “it also provided a valuable experience for development athletes, Reid, Philip & Smith.”
