Abu Dhabi International gets stamp of approval

Commemorative postage stamp unveiled ahead of world’s most glamorous triathlon

The Abu Dhabi International Triathlon has been commemorated in a special postage stamp. Emirates Post’s – the postal authority in the United Arab Emirates – has created a commemorate edition paying tribute to this year’s event. 

For a sporting event to be celebrated on a postage stamp is largely unheard of outside major international occasions such as the Olympic or Commonwealth Games. Attaining recognition for The Abu Dhabi International Triathlon from the UAE community reflects the event standing in the region.

Mr. Fahad Al Hosani, Acting President of Emirates Post Group said: “Emirates Post is always pleased to support sporting events, because we believe in the principle of having a healthy mind in a healthy body. We commend Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority for hosting this prestigious event, which has contributed to strengthening the UAE's position on the global sporting map and we are happy to promote this event globally through this special stamp."

The AED 3 (US 75 cents) stamp reflects the three triathlon disciplines, depicting competitors running, cycling and swimming and is printed in colours reflecting the hues of the sky and sea within the UAE.

The Abu Dhabi International Triathlon 2014 will take place on the 15 March. Now entering its fifth year it is one of the UAE’s most illustrious and successful sporting events, attracting the world’s top triathletes from over 50 countries.

The stamp, issued in single denomination of AED 3, along with a First Day Cover of AED 4, is now available at all main post offices in the UAE.

Organised by Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority, the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon was dubbed an ‘instant classic’ by the world’s media and ‘The World’s Most Glamorous Triathlon’ by top triathlon website, www.TriRadar.com, after the inaugural 2010 race. In 2011 the event doubled participation from its first year to 1,500 triathletes from 51 nations, with a 65-strong elite field that boasted 24 World Championships, 50 Ironman titles and over 100 national titles. In 2012, the event secured a record breaking 1,855 athletes, while 2013 saw over 2,000 entrants – ensuring its status as one of the world’s top international events. 

The Abu Dhabi International Triathlon course has been designed to showcase the beauty of the UAE capital city to the world and help push the emirate’s credentials as a leading alternative winter training base for athletes of all calibres.

Starting with a sunrise swim in the Arabian Gulf’s shimmering turquoise waters off Abu Dhabi’s blue flagged public beach, the course then weaves through the closed roads along the Abu Dhabi Corniche beach, up to the spectacular Yas Island and around the Yas Marina Circuit – home to the annual Formula 1™ Eithad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix - before returning to the heart of the capital.
