Franklin District Council and the Franklin Safer Community Council showed their commitment to crime free communities by hosting a “Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design” (CPTED) Workshop last week.

Attended by members of Franklin District Council’s staff, Councillors and other participates from throughout New Zealand, the two day training was run by Wendy Bell, well known CPTED specialist.

“The way a community is designed has an effect on how people behave and how safe or unsafe they feel. Modifying and designing the physical environment can be done in a way that lessens the chance of crime and makes people feel safer. It was this that Council staff and Councillors were learning to achieve,” says Franklin District Council’s Community Partnership Support Officer, Raewyn Barlow.

The workshop covered the theory behind crime prevention and where the principles of urban design fit in. Participates learnt how to assess a site’s environmental design, what elements could allow for crime and how to remedy or mitigate these.

Participates then took this knowledge out and assessed sites around Franklin including Rouslton Park, Bledisloe Park, the Anselmi development and the new Pukekohe Mega Centre.
