Gardeners are busy pruning, strimming, re-potting and sweeping up the autumn and winter leaf fall, while home owners are spring-cleaning and fluffing the cushions ready for the inaugural Barfoot & Thompson Home and Garden Tour.
The event will see a selection of stately homes in some of Auckland’s most sought-after addresses, open their doors for an exclusive sneak peek into homes the public are otherwise left to ponder what magnificence lies behind the gates.
Masterful sculptures, awe-inspiring developed gardens and perfectly manicured lawns, to grand staircases, antiques and impressive collections await those fortunate enough to secure one of a limited batch of tickets. Tickets to this one-day event will allow guests access to six elite homes and 10 immaculate gardens.
Sponsored by Barfoot & Thompson, and organised by the Rotary Club of Downtown Auckland, the event is not-for-profit with all proceeds going directly to the Starship Foundation and Rotary projects. The fundraising goal of $25,000 for each charity will enable two important pieces of breathing and resuscitation equipment to be purchased for Starship Children’s Hospital, and helps the Rotary Club of Downtown Auckland to continue its support of local community charities.
Pam Erceg, Barfoot & Thompson Epsom manager says, “The Barfoot & Thompson Home and Garden Tour is unique in that it promises a day of jaw-dropping splendour for guests, as they enter into homes that wouldn’t normally be part of a tour. Having helped Aucklanders and Northlanders sell and find homes for the past 90 years, we know the region inside out and have carefully hand selected a range of special properties we know home and garden enthusiasts will love to see.”
Following the tour, renowned gardening icon Xanthe White will host a special Garden After Party, a separate event at which guests can enjoy complimentary drinks and nibbles, and partake in both silent and live auctions – master auctioneer Tony Keegan will take to the podium transporting guests into a live home auction atmosphere. Items up for auction include a luxury weekend for two in a Quinovic Viaduct waterfront apartment, jewellery and books amongst other great items, and proceeds will go to the event’s charity partners.
“Having exhibited before, myself, I know the amount of work that goes into something like the Barfoot & Thompson Home and Garden Tour. How lucky are we to be able to view these private gardens and the work of respected landscape designers and true gardener’s first-hand. It’s so generous of the owners to open up their homes to the public. I’m sure there will be a little something to catch each person’s imagination and ideas to borrow on the day, even for those of us with smaller gardens,” says Xanthe White.
Xanthe White has authored a range of general and edible gardening books, two of which will be on sale at one of the homes on the tour – proceeds from the sale of these books on the day will go directly to the event’s charity partners.
