AUCKLAND

A Canterbury mechanic got his comeuppance when courts denied his motion for an appeal to reverse a sentence against him. The accused left a transmission unit that needed replacing in the car, saying the part was a reconditioned model.

Dodgy Mechanics

A second mechanic discovered that the numbers of the transmission unit still matched those of the vehicle, proving it was the original part. The courts charged the first mechanic with two counts of dishonestly using a document, and one count of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The court sentenced the mechanic to seven months of home detention after considerations of remorse and reparation. This is a very lenient sentence, and is less than any diesel mechanic in Auckland would expect if they even thought of trying a stunt like this. Fortunately, nothing this outlandish is even considered by any of the businesses this side of the island.
