The former CEO of Comvita, Brett Hewlett recently opened a local community garden for the Paengaroa community which will supply local families with organic produce, including tomatoes, pumpkins, potatoes, radishes and corn.

Addressing the students at the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Paengaroa School Principal, Bruce Lendrum, said although the garden sits on school property, it's for all of the community to enjoy.

"This community garden is for you, your family, and the wider Paengaroa community. Please help us maintain it and look after it.

"If you grow your own vegetables you know where they've come from and they're better for you, so having access to this right in our back yard is an absolute privilege. I want to say a big thank you to Comvita for making this possible," said Bruce.

Experience Comvita Chef, Chris Hargreaves – who helped organise another community garden on-site at Comvita’s Paengaroa Head Office - also played a major role in the co-ordination of the project. The community garden's sign, visible from the road, reads PAENGAROA COMMUNITY GARDEN – PROUDLY DONATED BY COMVITA.

Now an Advisor to the Comvita Board, Brett Hewlett told the students while opening the new community garden, "We never forget where we belong”.

“Paengaroa is the home of Comvita, our heritage, our whakapapa, and we're proud to be able to support the local community in a way that encourages living a healthy lifestyle," said Brett.
