Earlier this year Franklin District Council flushed out the water pipes in Pukekohe, a major project for all involved. The aim of the project was to remove the build-up of sediments from the inside of the pipe walls and greatly reduce the occurrence of discoloured water.

The major part of this work ended in July and Council has now released data to show the effect of the work.

“We know the flushing caused some people difficulties and we were really grateful for the community’s support and assistance during that time despite the problems. That’s why we want to let you know how successful it was and to update you on what we are now doing” says Franklin District Council’s Water and Wastewater Asset Manager, Robert Workman.

In the financial year 2006 – 2007 Pukekohe had 14 streets reporting discoloured water more than 10 times a year. Some of these streets were reaching over 20 reports a year. With almost half of this year over only two streets have reported fives or more events of discoloured water.

“We’ve been carefully studying reports of discoloured water that have come in after the flushing so that we can isolate areas which still have problems and do further work there,” says Robert.

That’s why the Council says it is really important that residents continue to report any occurrence of discoloured water.

“By gathering the data we can find where we need to focus our work,” says Robert.

To report any occurrence of discoloured water call Council on (09) 237 1300 at any hour of the day.
