Stardome is New Zealand’s largest planetarium theatre and every month they have a myriad of marvellous events which are, for the most part, open to the public at large. April sees Stardome hosting a night with Yuri Gagarin, the very first Russian cosmonaut. This event is being called ‘Yuri’s Night’ and is a very special event celebrating Yuri’s achievement.

Attendees will be treated to the planetarium show ‘Dawn of the Space Age’, an incredibly accurate historic reconstruction of man’s first foray into space, and will be first-hand observers to this exciting time in history as they watch the launch of Sputnik and take a visual tour of important Russian space history. Along the way are glimpses of the Viking mission to Mars and the Voyager mission to the outer planets.

The film also takes us to the International Space Station, the ‘X-prize’-winning private space ship and talks about future Mars exploration. Who were the men and women who took part in these death-defying endeavours? We can witness their drive and passion to explore, and their perseverance, in Dawn of the Space Age. After the show people can enjoy a special presentation about Yuri Gagarin and learn more about the first human in space. This show includes a glass of wine, and snacks.

Another fabulous event this month is the “We are Stars” Autumn School Holiday Programme. Children can watch the planetarium show “We are Stars” and go on a journey through space and time, then head into the Stardome “Lab” and have fun with science! They will watch a dry-ice demonstration, then have a go with mini experiments all about light, energy, and the sun. There will be lots of interactive fun, and there’s a giveaway to take home too!

Also, if the weather is nice the Stardome team will enlist the kids’ help to countdown “3! 2! 1!” to launch a water and air-powered rocket! “We are Stars” is a fun, new planetarium show with a focus on some high-level science topics like atoms, molecules, and the evolution of the Universe. Younger kids may not understand all the concepts, but they’ll still enjoy the immersive imagery and the interactive activities afterwards. This event goes from April 18th to the 29th, excluding ANZAC day.
