Hundreds of Taranaki passengers have been affected by the airport's closure this afternoon due to heavy winds and severe weather conditions.

Flights departing to Wellington and Auckland with Air New Zealand had been cancelled for the afternoon.

While Jetstar was first to cancel this morning's service from Auckland to New Plymouth, resulting in the outbound service back to Auckland also being cancelled.

Jetstar Taranaki Regional Advocate Michael Riley said the weather was causing issues across the region and it wasn't safe to fly.

"Passengers will be moved onto other flights, and accomodation will be provided for those that require it," he said.

This afternoon, Jetstar made the final decision to cancel all afternoon services to and from New Plymouth.
