Spring is almost here, and the professional team at Shape Landscaping have some great ideas for this time of the year. August means that our fruit trees should soon be getting ready to burst into blossom, as days get longer and the weather gets warmer. For those areas that are still getting hit by frosts, people should remember to keep the plants susceptible to frost protected with netting.

The best thing about this time of the year is that tamarillos, persimmon, lemons, limes, mandarins and avocados should soon be ready to pick! Garden stores will have a wide range of deciduous fruit trees in stock at the moment, and these can be planted throughout July, August and September while the plants are still dormant. It’s best to plant these trees in full sun, in a sheltered position away from prevailing winds and stake them to enable the roots to anchor themselves into the soil for the first few seasons. The Shape team advise it is also a good idea to spray existing deciduous fruit trees with a winter clean up spray (lime sulphur) to remove any lingering pests and diseases.

It’s also a good time to plant raspberries, blueberries, boysenberries, blackberries and strawberries. Strawberries are adaptable and grow in most sunny situations, but do not tolerate wet soils so should be planted in a fertile, well-drained soil. Plants should be watered thoroughly after planting.

There are several plants that need pruning throughout August and now is a good time to prune grapevines for the next season. It’s also a good time to prune hibiscus, roses, hydrangeas, and fruit trees as the weather is beginning to warm up again. It’s also time to nourish plants and get them into action for spring by applying compost and liquid feed.
