Matilda the Musical recently enjoyed enormous success during its lengthy and greatly adored Auckland showing at The Civic, New Zealand.

The magical musical kicked off late August and finished on the 22nd of October, making a near two-month run for the show. Kiwis from all around New Zealand flew in to catch this amazing production – earning positive reviews from Stuff and NZ Herald.

The Royal Shakespeare Company production is based on Roald Dahl’s feisty young heroine from his 1988 novel. The book was brought to life with amazing and enchanting production quality: from the colourful and dynamic set, to Tim Minchin’s superb music and lyrics, and Peter Darling’s lively choreography. What left the biggest impression on everyone’s hearts, however, were the very endearing performances by the lead hits – the four lovely Matildas.

The Matildas, namely Izellah Connelly, 10, a Kiwi, Annabella Cowley, 11, and Eva Murawski, 11, Queenslanders, each perform two shows a week in rotation. These four child stars impress young and old alike with their riveting acting, singing and dancing skills – so much so that Matilda naturally became a hot topic in schools as well.

In late September, kids from Oranga Primary School emailed questions to the Matilda actors after discussing the novel in class. What they didn’t expect was to get their questions answered in person, when the four international stars visited their school unannounced. Suffice it to say the stars surprised and delighted their young and impressionable fans.

The lucky Kiwi students had the opportunity to ask questions about being a Matilda, and the actors eagerly answered them. They revealed important behind-the-scene realities about their acting lives, like how they spend four hours a day tutoring and the rest of the day rehearsing, and how they have been acting for around four years.

The success that these four Matildas have enjoyed demonstrates the importance of cultivating performing talent in early years. Thankfully, there is no shortage of professional dance studios in Auckland providing training to budding young performers. Neverland Studios is one such studio that offers kids dance classes for children as young as 18 months old. Here they can develop a range of skills and enrol into different dance genres including Jazz, Hip Hop, and Ballet classes.
