Chorus Changes Consents for Shared Driveways for Fibre Orders

Chorus has changed the consent process for ultra-fast broadband (UFB) orders. All orders received from October 1, 2017 will follow the new process as Chorus tries to get more New Zealanders access to fibre. They have changed the process for gaining permission from neighbours who live in apartments or units or along a shared driveway. The company hopes this will get more people access to fibre quickly.

Around 13 per cent of all requests for connection to the fibre network require permission for access to property shared between neighbours. This results in frustration and delays. In many instances the orders are then cancelled. With the demand of UFB ramping up the government has been trying to make it easy and quick for individuals and businesses to connect to UFB.

With the new process those homes that need consent will be assessed by Chorus to figure out the work involved in bringing fibre through the common areas of the property so that they can get connected. Depending on the work involved each job will then be categorised to determine how much notice is needed, whether there will be objections or if there is need for consent as it is required today.

Category 1 has minimal lasting effect on the property or the shared area. Chorus will give at least five working days’ notice before work begins. Category 2 jobs may have some physical impact on share areas and in some instances objections can be lodged. Category 3 jobs have a greater impact on the surrounding areas of the property and will require consent before work begins. All jobs are designed to have minimal impact on the property.

According to Chorus once the changes are made only 30 per cent of people will be using the current process. These changes will only affect homes that need consent. Freestanding homes that stand on their own section with their own private access will not need to notify anyone before starting work.

Chorus works with different phone and broadband providers to deliver the fibre network to homes and businesses across the country. Once the fibre network is built down the street, customers can place an order for a fibre connection with their broadband provider. Chorus will connect and install fibre after the order is received from them.
