Payport, the New Zealand-based courier service, has recently re-branded, and will from now on be known as Parcelport at www.parcelport.co.nz . Payport was founded in 2011, and started off as a payment and freight tech company. However, as e-commerce has continued to grow, the logistics of being paid online, and dispatching goods out to customers has become more of a challenge. As Jimmy Wu, Parcelport’s Managing Director, explains it, “Payment and freight are two important infrastructure supporting ecommerce, and Payport was established to address these two areas.”

Wu also advises that the company recently partnered with global transport and logistics giant TNT, and New Zealand Post, to service New Zealand exporters, focusing on servicing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), while its larger competitors focus on bigger businesses.

For example, the way this would work is an SME can place their customer’s consignment order with Parcelport, who would then assign the job to the appropriate courier company for delivery. Parcelport’s role in this arrangement is that they calculate the freight cost, print the tickets and shipping labels for the courier and track the delivery.

The freight side of the business has grown exponentially over the last few years, and in 2016 the company was listed as one of the 500 fastest growing technology companies in the Asia Pacific by Deloitte, and was finalist in the Auckland Westpac Best Emerging Business Award in 2017. As the name Payport no longer represents their core business, the company has now pivoted to concentrate on its parcel business, and feel that Parcelport is a more appropriate name.
