The Pukeahu National War Memorial Park in Wellington and its expansion was a massive government project. Part of the Memorial Park project was putting Buckle Street underground to create a bigger, greener space and remove traffic by incorporating an underpass. To meet the project’s tight deadline, the engineers looked to Stremaform® a Max Frank product supplied by Fletcher Reinforcing for their construction joints.

Stremaform® is used as lost formwork for working joints in floor slabs, ceilings and walls. It consists of a special expanded metal mesh that replaces traditional formwork which stays in the concrete and eliminates any need for formwork removal or scabbling prior to the second concrete pour.

Stremaform was supplied by New Zealand company Fletcher Reinforcing for the National War Memorial Park underpass’ new “cut and cover” trench slab. Fletcher Reinforcing provided flat sheets of Stremaform for fabrication on-site.

Cole Meiring, Memorial Park Alliance’s Project Engineer, had this to say about Stremaform’s® performance:

“Stremaform® offered us the ability to set up our construction joints well ahead of schedule without having to return to the joint after a concrete pour to remove traditional formwork. The joint finish allows us to fix steel continually, without any remedial work to the concrete or waiting for formwork to be removed. Stremaform® is a great product which we will be looking at using on future projects.”

The underpass has unified the National War Memorial and the Tomb of the Unknown Memorial and effectively removed traffic from Buckle Street. Additionally, the unified National Memorial precinct has enhanced Wellington’s urban landscape and effectively created pathways for people to pause and reflect.

Fletcher Reinforcing is New Zealand’s leading provider of Max Frank’s Stremaform® construction joint systems. They offer a full design service to suit any project, speeding up construction, improving build quality, and cost-effectively reducing skilled labour costs.
