New LED streetlights in Taupo are expected to save $92,000 in annual power costs. Taupō District Council is replacing 4000 luminescent bulbs across the district with LED lights. The lights cost $2.5 million to replace. However, an 85 per cent subsidy from the New Zealand Transport agency means the upgrade only costs Taupō District Council [TDC] $375,000 to carry out.

The new LED lights use 57 per cent less power than the bulb lights to operate. This will reduce annual running costs by $92,464. The old bulbs lasted between 6,000 and 24,000 hours before they needed to be replaced or 32 months max'. The new LED bulbs, however, are expected to last between 50,000 and 100,000 hours – between 5 and 11 years.

City councils around New Zealand are looking at cost saving LED options. The Dunedin City Council is planning to install 3000K LED lights on the city's streets as part of a $13.1million street-light upgrade. It will trial the lights later this year. The NZ Transport Agency prefers 4000K (a neutral white light) for state highways because it says they provide the best and safest colour temperature for drivers and pedestrians.

Wholesale specialists Bright Light say LED lights have quickly become the smart choice for discerning consumers in New Zealand and around the world. Because LED lights only use a small percentage of the energy that incandescent, halogen, or CFL bulbs do, using LEDs gives a massive reduction in power bills, on-going maintenance, and bulb replacement costs.

As a pioneer and leader in the New Zealand LED lighting industry, Bright Light has a strong presence in the commercial, residential, hospitality, marine, and architectural markets.  With a long lifespan, an average LED can be expected to last for 50,000 hours, which means if the lights are on for 10 hours a day, the LED can last for almost 14 years. LEDs are far more durable than other types of lighting, as they aren’t comprised of thin glass and delicate filaments.

LEDs are non-toxic, have low heat production, emit no UV rays, and more than 90% of an LED light’s parts can be recycled. Therefore, LEDs are far more environmentally friendly than their lighting counterparts.  These lights offer design flexibility and are available in a variety of forms, which allows for the creation of a diverse range of lighting effects with increased control over light, colour, beam angle, and dispersal. Another useful advantage of using LED lights is that they light up as soon as they are switched on.

Bright Light is one of New Zealand’s leading lighting wholesalers. For those who are looking for LED lighting solutions for a project, technicians from Bright Light can help implement an excellent lighting result. The company stocks a wide range of innovative LED lighting products, ranging from high-powered and architectural to ambient and residential.
