Weatherwatch.co.nz says temperatures will continue to steadily climb in December and now may be the perfect time for homeowners to start looking at cooling options. With so many heat pump brands and models on the market it can be difficult to know which heat pump is ideal.

Air-conditioning specialists Heat Pump Guys have a quick guide on their website that will cut through conflicting adverting campaigns, industry jargon and help home owners narrow down the best choice for their needs.

The guide says highwall heat pumps are very efficient, low priced and easiest to install. Floor console units tuck away to be unobtrusive in the room, and also tend to be less drafty on heating compared with highwall heat pumps. Ducted systems are quiet, almost entirely hidden and provide an even temperature throughout the house. Ceiling cassette units can be installed in a wide range of locations that don’t suit any of the other types, and are great at conditioning a wide area.

The company also provides a detailed comparison of HRVs and heat pumps, which is a cause of great confusion for home owners. Ducted heat pump air conditioning systems from the Heat Pump Guys can include a fresh air intake, which will allow the home to be ventilated at the same time as it heats or cools. This option is fantastic for customers who need to control moisture levels in the home, as well as heating and cooling for comfort. Heat Pump Guys say design is crucial for the successful implementation of this option, so a consultation is essential to see if this is an option for homes.

The other option available with them is the Heat Recovery Ventilation System (HRV). They are, however, ventilation systems and more aptly, positive pressure ventilation systems - operating by drawing the air “stored” in the ceiling and pushing it through ducts into the various rooms in a home.

On sunny days, the air inside a roof space is generally drier and warmer than the air circulating inside the house, but there is a limited supply of this air in the ceiling space. By pushing this warm air into the home, the system simultaneously forces out existing damp air, thereby reducing condensation. A drier home is a warmer home, but as the available warm air in the roof space is pushed into the house, it is replaced with cooler air from outside, which in turn, is pushed into the home, once again reducing the temperature.

Heat Pump Guys are Auckland’s leading independent heat pump and air conditioning specialists. They offer the best value for money regarding advice, sales, installation and maintenance services for domestic, residential and light commercial customers.
