Eighteen states across the United States passed legislation for the “right to repair” - allowing consumers to fix their iPhone using independent repair services - and now the European Union is set to follow suit.
A growing demand by consumers to allow independent repair for their devices has been equally driven by a lack of transparency from global technology giants. One popular belief is that companies are opposed to people being able to fix their own devices for the sake of greed. Previously, this would have required consumers in the United States and the European Union to replace their iPhone by purchasing a replacement, much to the chagrin of consumers everywhere.
“The right to repair movement really stems from consumer frustrations with products that break long before they should and can’t be repaired because it’s either too expensive, or it’s too much of a hassle. Increasingly, it’s because products aren’t designed to be repaired,” said Libby Peake, senior policy adviser at Green Alliance.
