PC Rentals Limited has been in business for over 26 years, and is 100% New Zealand owned and operated, and with three branches based in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, offering nationwide customer service and support. This month they offer some hints and tips to make life easier for computer owners, starting with software updates.

Computers work better and are more secure if you regularly run software updates, and to get the latest Microsoft updates, click on start-windows update (win XP) or start, all programs-windows update (win 7).  This will take you to the Windows update screen which will show if any updates need to be installed.  Other manufacturers that may have updates that you require can include Intel, Adobe, Hewlett Packard and Apple.

All computers from PC Rentals will come with an anti-virus program installed. If your current computer does not have one installed there are many free choices available to install.  You can choose from Microsoft Security Essentials, AVG, Avast, and Avira to name but a few.  The main point is that if you don’t have an anti-virus program installed, you should get one now.

If you do get a virus a good place to start is with a product like Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware. Its sole purpose is to wipe out viruses, Trojans, rootkits and different types of malware.  It does not have ongoing protect, so can only be used after infection.  To prevent infection, you should install an anti-virus program.  Other choices include Comodo Cleaning Essentials 6.
