It’s a battle of the big teams at the national ITF Taekwon-Do Championships at Pulman Arena in Counties Manukau.

At the end of the first day of competition the host region led the medal table with 27 gold medals, four ahead of nearest rival, Auckland North.

Counties Manukau, who are the three-time defending champs had also secured 29 silver and 29 bronze medals to gold with their golds for a total of 85 as they put pressure on all of the nearly 400 competitors.

Many people taking part are members of the New Zealand team which finished third overall at the world championships in Germany earlier in the year.

Second team Auckland North have a total of 69 medals. Central Districts including the strong Southern Cross club in Palmerston North are third with 12 gold, 9 silver and 17 bronze.

Wellington sit in fourth with seven gold and four silver, just ahead of Midlands who also have seven gold, but just two silver.

The South Island are next with the small Australian team at the bottom of the medal table with three gold.

Day two of the event has a number of the notable events in power breaking and speciality as well as well as the senior sparring.
