Lower-limb varicose veins (VVs) are common, and known to have a higher prevalence among people who work in occupations requiring prolonged standing. There are few studies on occupational risk factors in the general population, but most studies on VV-related occupational risk factors deal with working in a standing position.

There are a number of things which can increase your likelihood of developing varicose veins, including being female, having a close family member with varicose veins, older age, being overweight, being pregnant and having a job that involves long periods of standing (think of the nursing profession).

The primary job-related characteristic that increases varicose veins risk is lack of movement. This is because staying in one position for a long time forces your veins to work harder to pump blood to your heart, and the science proving that prolonged periods of standing or sitting increase varicose vein risk is pretty conclusive. Also, some studies found that the risk associated with standing for long periods is even worse if you are overweight.

Palm Clinic say that you can protect yourself if your job requires you to stand or sit all day, and there are a number of things you can do to keep your blood pumping and prevent varicose veins, such as getting regular exercise, in particular walking or jogging. You can also reduce pressure on your veins by maintaining a healthy weight. Similarly, if you can you should try to take frequent small breaks, and remember to use the stairs instead of the lift.

They also say, that if you have to stand, you should choose shoes with flat heels rather than high heels, wear compression stockings to improve circulation and keep blood from pooling in your leg veins, and when sitting, you should  shift your position often and try to avoid crossing your legs. Lastly, during your lunch hour take a quick walk or elevate your legs for a few minutes.
