The first time three humans spent Christmas in space was 50 years ago in 1968 during Apollo 8. It happened to also be the first time a crew orbited the Moon. The crew rocketed into orbit on December 21, and after circling the Moon 10 times on Christmas Eve, it was time to come home. On Christmas morning, mission control waited anxiously for word that Apollo 8's engine burn to leave lunar orbit had worked. They soon got confirmation when astronaut Jim Lovell radioed, "Roger, please be informed there is a Santa Claus."

If you want to learn more interesting holiday season facts like this one, then head along to Our Night Sky – Christmas Edition. A 360-degree planetarium experience, you will sit under New Zealand’s largest snow-globe and explore the stars, constellations, planets above Auckland…but with added sugar, spice and everything nice!

Wed-Sun during December (until 23 Dec)
8pm, Adults $15, children $12, Bookings essential

The Great Christmas Giveback
'Tis the season for giving! Christmas should be a special time for everyone and while many of us can get caught up with shopping, festivities and merrymaking, we shouldn’t forget that amongst the many celebrating with their families, there are also those for whom Christmas will not be as merry.

Not to take away from the shine of Christmas or to provide a reason for us to dwell in negativity, but rather, a reminder to ourselves about the Christmas spirit of giving and the importance of spreading positivity. Taking the time to reflect on your good fortune and giving back to others can make the holiday season that much more meaningful. So, Stardome is embracing the spirit of giving by giving back to our customers and two important, local charities.

Bring along an item to donate to Auckland City Mission or SPCA Auckland (cash donations will also be accepted for both organisations) and you’ll get into a regular planetarium show for only $6. Regular shows from 16 November – 15 December will be discounted with a donated item, per ticket, to one of these two well-known Auckland charities.

Select your date of visit and show, then give Stardome a call on 09 624 1246 if you plan on bringing a donated item and they will book you in. So how about it? Are you ready to put a little ‘Merry’ into someone's Christmas? See the website for terms and conditions.
