What started initially as an idea to get a larger participation by New Zealand musicians at ROCK2WGTN the now aptly titled RIFF2WGTN has taken on an identity of it’s own.

Promoter Capital C: Concert, radio station THE ROCK, the retail music chain MUSIC WORKS and special effects studio WETA WORKSHOP have joined forces to to make this part of the two day rock spectacular an event within an event.

The goal was to find six (6) of the best rock guitarists amongst the ranks of the nation’s top bands and to have them perform a ‘duelling guitars’ opening on the first night, Easter Saturday. They had to have had previous experience, preferable in front of a big crowd, be professional and naturally to play a total of 10 minutes totally solo.

Considering that they would open on the same bill as LORDI, ALICE COOPER, KISS, OZZY OSBOURNE, WHITESNAKE & POISON, the appeal must have struck a note as over 60 exceptionally talented ‘riff mystros’ have responded.

Says Phil Sprey of Capital C: concerts, ‘The huge wish to be part of this event by such a large number of the country’s best guitarists has been very unexpected”, “some of the bands these guys are coming from are household names and one NZ charts.”

With a entry cut off day today (Jan 21) the panel of judges are going to shortlist the entries from submitted material fifteen who will be brought to Wellington for a LIVE play-off on January 31 at the MusicWorks retail outlet in Victoria Street.

Being broadcast on THE ROCK live from 7 to 10pm and online at www.therock.net.nz , the RIFF2 WGTN playoff will be judged by a panel headed by the stations music guru, ‘The Axeman’ Paul Martin.

To add further ‘magic’ to the promotion Richard Taylor and the team at WETA Workshop, yes the same crew that won the Academy Awards for LOTR and King Kong, have dresses six guitars from MusicWorks in a very special way. The playing surface of each instrument has been updated with special reflective tiles which will add a dimension to the surprise way these finalists will play at the Westpac Stadium on March 22.

Rock2Wgtn continues to become the most spectacular Rock Event ever held in New Zealand and Riff2Wgtn an opportunity for six top musicians to join the other representatives, The Symphony of Screams, Sonic Altar and The Valves as the Kiwi contribution.
