Colour, confidence and transformation: Acclaimed artists Maico Camilo and Georgina Hoby Scutt take over Turua Gallery this spring
Turua Gallery situated in the heart of Saint Heliers is set to become a celebration of colour, creativity and self-expression this spring, with solo exhibitions by celebrated artists Maico Camilo and Georgina Hoby Scutt opening in October and November.
The two exhibitions offer distinctly different artistic experiences – from Maico Camilo’s bold, electric celebration of identity and creative freedom in Unapologetically Dazzling, to Georgina Hoby Scutt’s deeply personal exploration of renewal, resilience and emergence in The Afterlight.
Both exhibitions will feature opening nights at Turua Gallery, giving art lovers and collectors the opportunity to meet the artists and experience the collections in person.
Maico Camilo: Unapologetically Dazzling

Brazilian-born, New Zealand-based artist Maico Camilo will open the season with Unapologetically Dazzling, a high-energy solo exhibition featuring approximately 20–25 works drawn from his My Wonderful Self, Infinite Bloom, Abstract and Bold Figuratives series.
The exhibition is an unapologetic celebration of colour, confidence and creative liberation, bringing together heavily textured abstract works and expressive, wide-eyed figurative paintings.
Through neon layers, clashing patterns, bold checkerboards and dense impasto textures, Camilo creates an exuberant visual world that encourages viewers to embrace brilliance without hesitation.
“Unapologetically Dazzling is really about embracing who you are without needing permission,” says Camilo. “I want the work to feel alive – full of colour, energy and emotion. There is a freedom in allowing yourself to be seen and in not trying to make everything fit neatly into a box.”
Born in Brazil, Camilo first arrived in New Zealand in 2005 and has since lived and travelled throughout Europe, Asia, South America and Oceania. His experiences across different cultures have informed an artistic practice centred around people, connection, perspective and the way we interpret the world around us.
Over almost two decades, his work has been exhibited and collected internationally, with invitations to show in New York, Milan, Paris, Sydney, Tokyo and Venice, as well as at Auckland Museum.
For Turua Gallery owner Liss Wallace, Camilo’s work offers something beyond its immediate visual impact.
“Maico’s work stops you in your tracks, but then it asks you to look again,” says Wallace. “There is incredible energy and colour, but underneath that is a real sense of conversation. We love that his work doesn’t tell you exactly what to think – it allows you to bring your own experiences and emotions to it.”
Georgina Hoby Scutt: The Afterlight – A Renaissance

Following Camilo’s exhibition, Turua Gallery will present The Afterlight, a new collection of 20 paintings by New Zealand artist Georgina Hoby Scutt.
The exhibition explores renewal, transformation and the process of emerging from darkness into something new, expressed through bold colour, gestural mark-making and layered abstraction.
Working across linen and canvas with acrylic, oil and oil pastel, Hoby Scutt’s paintings move between abstraction, landscape and portraiture. Figures and fragments of the natural world appear within layered compositions, creating a sense of memory, movement and connection.
The works range from intimate pieces through to larger 1000mm x 1000mm paintings, with the collection building in intensity as it progresses.
“The Afterlight is about renewal,” says Hoby Scutt. “It’s not about returning to what was but emerging into something new. I wanted the paintings to move from restraint towards freedom, from shadow towards light, and ultimately towards something that feels vibrant and alive.”
With a background in print and textile design, including five years working as a freelance textile designer in Barcelona, Hoby Scutt brings a distinctive understanding of colour, pattern and composition to her painting practice.
She began painting in 2016 and describes herself primarily as a Colourist, drawing inspiration from artists including William de Kooning, Grace Hartigan, Lee Krasner, Matisse, Cézanne, Gauguin, Ivon Hitchens and Mary Fedden, alongside contemporary fashion and interiors.
Wallace says The Afterlight represents a powerful evolution in Hoby Scutt’s artistic practice.
“Georgina’s paintings have this incredible sense of movement and optimism,” says Wallace. “You can see the layers building and changing, and there’s something really human about that process. The Afterlight feels like a celebration of resilience – of finding your way through something and coming out the other side with even more colour and energy.”
Two exhibitions, two very different journeys
While the exhibitions are visually and conceptually distinct, Wallace says they share an underlying theme of connection and the emotional power of art.
“Having Maico and Georgina exhibiting so close together is really exciting because their work is so different, but both artists create paintings that make you feel something,” says Wallace. “Maico is bold, electric and completely unapologetic, while Georgina’s work speaks to renewal and finding light. Together, they show just how many ways art can connect with us.”
Turua Gallery is encouraging art lovers, collectors and the wider public to attend the two opening nights, with both artists available to meet guests and experience the exhibitions in person.
