Reservoir levels are still recovering from the amount of water taken to fight a blaze at Coromandel town on the weeekend.

Thames-Coromandel District Council Operations Manager Greg Hampton says the Karaka Stream which supplies water to the town is running very low and the council’s draw from this stream is now restricted.

A ban on the use of sprinklers is in place in Coromandel to help conserve water.

There is a ban on the use of hoses and sprinklers in Matatoki where at times there has been little or no water in the reservoir due to demand mostly from farms. Mr Hampton said the recent rain wasn’t long enough or significant enough to ease the need for water restrictions.

A sprinkler ban is also in place at Pauanui and Tairua, where water-take from the Pepe Stream remains close to the limit allowed under the council’s resource consent from Environment Waikato.

Water restrictions are advertised by signage around the district and the latest restrictions are available to view on the public notices of the council’s website www.tcdc.govt.nz or call 07 868 0200.
