The City Council is removing three trees in the Square for safety reasons.

Two of the trees have been in decline for about 10 years and Recreation and Community Facilities Manager, John Brenkley, says they are now starting to drop branches.

One of the kowhai is located in the duck pond quadrant on the mound near Wholly Bagels while the other kowhai is in the events quadrant.

The trees will be removed on Monday and the stumps ground.

The third tree, a totara, was relocated during the development to the Square but has slowly declined and is now dead. The totara is in a line of trees across from the City Library.

John Brenkley explains that the Council wants to remove the trees before the next major event in the Square on Waitangi Day.

“All trees have a finite life and it’s time these are removed as they could pose a safety risk,” he says. “The Council has an ongoing tree replacement programme and further trees will be planted in the Square over the winter season.”
