One of New Zealand’s finest classical pianists will visit Queenstown for a single performance on Wednesday, March 5 at 7.30pm.

Maurice Till’s music career has extended well over 50-years and has covered performing, teaching and administration. He will perform live at the Memorial Hall on the community’s Yamaha Grand Piano.

The Queenstown recital is being presented by Creative Queenstown with entry by gold coin donation to ensure it is accessible to the entire community.

Creative Queenstown co-ordinator Jan Maxwell said the organisation was delighted to secure the event.

“Maurice is one of New Zealand’s greatest musicians. He is well known and respected around the globe as a pianist and we are fortunate and delighted to welcome him to Queenstown for a single performance,” she said.

The Creative Queenstown committee believed this presented a great opportunity for the community to listen to an outstanding performer and was keen to restrict the cost to a donation so no-one was excluded by price.

Mr Till’s reputation as a solo pianist was established in the 1960s when he toured New Zealand extensively. He later became a sought-after international accompanist for artists such as Kiri Te Kanawa.

Recently he had played solo in several special recitals around the world arranged by various New Zealand High Commissions. In long associations with University of Otago and University of Canterbury he taught advanced piano students, many of whom had since established their own successful careers, including Michael Houston.

Doors open at 7 pm.

Creative Queenstown is the local arm of Creative NZ. It allocates government funding to local arts groups. Funding application rounds close in May, August, November and February.
